18 October 2007
Chris Cormack won the Open Source Contributor award at the inaugural New Zealand Open Source Awards held in Wellington last night.
The successful event was organised, CatalystIT, a Wellington based open source company. Nominations were sought via the NZOSA website, with many being recieved from outside New Zealand. Over 130 nominations were received and had to be whittled down to finalists and then winners by the international judging panel.
Chris Cormack was nominated in the Open Source Contributor category , which sought to recognise "outstanding contributions by a New Zealand individual or organisation to one or more open source projects". Chris is well known to all the Koha developers and has poured thousands of hours, sponsored and on his dime, into the project.
The Koha project was a finalist in the Projects Category. Koha mentioned several times by different speakers during the night as an example of open source success in New Zealand, including the Minister of Information Technology Hon David Cunliffe.
Members of the original Koha development team were on hand to congratulate Chris, including the original sponsor library, the Horowhenua Library Trust.
