Koha Moves To Savannah
2 December 2005
The move from Sourceforge to Savannah is now complete.
What's Savannah?
Savannah is an open source repository. It was open by the Free Software Foundation (FSF) when Sourceforge decided to no longer release their code under GPL.
It's based on GPL sourceforge code, with some/many improvements.
It provides exactly the same services (CVS, mailing lists, bug tracker, ...)
Why the move?
For 2 reasons :
- Performance. Sourceforge has many performance problems (probably due to their succes).
Sometimes, the CVS is down, sometimes it's the mailing list. From a developer's point of view, access to the CVS repository is much quicker on Savannah.
- Philsophy : Koha is released as open source software under the GPL. As is Savannah. Sourceforge code is no longer released under the GPL. It is a better fit for Koha, as an open source project, to support another open source project.
Mailing Lists
For most of the community, you may not have even noticed yet. The main koha list is still hosted by Katipo. As for the devel, win32, bugs, cvs and other lists, these have all be migrated across by Paul and Joshua. They have also added some others. For a full list of mailing lists, check out the Savannah Koha Project pages.
